Meet the Bees

A secret world, buzzing with life, just beneath the blossom.

Welcome to the wild, humming world of Mel da Terra, where ancient trees, mountain air and the rhythm of bees come together in every jar of honey. Our hives are home to thousands of tiny master craftsbees, each playing their part in a living ecosystem.

They are the creators of Terra Escura™

our bold forest honey  and the inspiration behind Terra Escura™ Botanica, our new wellness line of honey-based balms and skincare.

What’s for Dinner?

Bees don’t just sip nectar — they’re expert foragers and gourmet chefs of the natural world.

  • Nectar = their sugary energy drink

  • Pollen = their protein-packed power food

  • Bee bread = fermented pollen, aged like wild cheese

Inside the hive, they mix, store, and age these ingredients with astonishing precision — feeding the colony through seasons of sun and snow.

Do Bees Sleep?

Yes — and it’s adorable.

  • Bees nap curled in flowers or hive corners

  • They fold their antennae and go still

  • Some even link legs and sleep in chains

  • They can snore (in bee terms!) and change positions like a little bunkbed family

Life of a Queen

She doesn’t wear a crown, but:

  • She lays up to 2,000 eggs a day

  • Lives up to 5 years

  • Is tended by loyal attendants 24/7
If she weakens. The hive enters emergency mode — raising a new queen by feeding royal jelly to a baby larva.

Smarter Than You Think

Bees can:

  • Solve simple puzzles

  • Count to four

  • Recognise human faces

  • Navigate miles of terrain and return precisely home

  • Show signs of optimism or stress depending on environment

The Waggle Dance

Bees communicate through rhythm and geometry.

  • A wiggle tells distance

  • An angle tells direction to the sun
It’s the grooviest, most accurate GPS in the natural world.

How Honey is Made

This is where Terra Escura™ begins — deep in the forest, filtered by wings and wisdom.

  1. Nectar collected

  2. Enzymes added

  3. Passed mouth-to-mouth between bees

  4. Moisture reduced

  5. Fanned by wing

  6. Sealed with wax and aged naturally

Bee Jobs

Each bee has a role:

  • Nurses care for larvae

  • Builders shape wax combs

  • Foragers travel up to 5 km

  • Guards defend the entrance — from hornets, wasps, mice, or even clumsy beekeepers

And like us, bees change jobs as they age — a society in motion.

Winter in the Hive

There are no flowers in winter, but the bees survive.

They form a living heat ball, vibrating to keep the queen warm. Outer bees rotate inward to rest. It’s teamwork at its finest — and proof that cooperation can warm even the coldest months.

Lifespans

  • Queen: 3–5 years

  • Worker (summer): ~6 weeks

  • Worker (winter): 4–6 months

  • Drone (male): Only until mating

Drone life expectancy: One honeymoon.

The Bees of Mel da Terra

Our bees roam freely in mountain air, feasting on wild rosemary, chestnut blossom, walnut pollen and forest herbs. They produce honey that is bold, wild, and unfiltered — just like the land itself.

From this rich world, we bring you:

  • Mel da Terra: the name of our bee sanctuary

  • Terra Escura™: raw, antioxidant-rich forest honey

  • Terra Escura™ Botanica: skincare and wellness, straight from the hive

No chemicals. No sugar syrup. No tricks.
Just sun, soil, and song - in every drop.
